HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE THE GROOM FROM GROOMSMEN

  • How to

All eyes are on the bride, especially when she walks down the aisle. We get it—but grooms deserve love, attention, and a way to stand out on their wedding day too.

How can a groom stand out on his wedding day?

Learn how to differentiate the groom from groomsmen and complement your new spouse. A quality wedding suit—no matter how charmingly handsome it makes you look—may not be enough. And, that’s okay. The Modern Groom shares some great industry secrets that help every attendee know how to differentiate the groom from groomsmen.

DIFFERENT COLOR SUIT

Don’t ever say this to her, but the bride has it easy. As far as standing out from her bridesmaids goes, it isn’t exactly rocket science. Everyone knows she’ll be the one in some sort of shade of white and her dress is typically more elaborate than everyone else’s.

Won’t everyone know you’re the groom if you’re standing at the end of the aisle with the officiant?

True. But, we want the groom to stand out from the rest of his groomsmen for the entire night.

Wearing a different color suit from the groomsmen can be a good way to differentiate yourself from them while still complementing their looks. It’s really important to still wear the same style of suit, even though it’s a different color. You want to stand out, but you also want your look to be cohesive and intentional. If you’re worried that the looks aren’t blending, talk to a virtual stylist at The Modern Groom for style advice.

Choosing colors that are in the same color palette can be a great way to do this. If your boys are in navy, consider going with a midnight blue suit. If you’re wearing a grey suit, consider getting the groomsmen to wear a lighter or darker shade of grey.

DIFFERENT ACCESSORIES

You can’t tie the knot without a tie to complete your wedding suit look. Does anyone remember the chokehold those floral ties have had on the wedding industry in the last decade? You know the ones we’re talking about, right?

There’s nothing inherently wrong with those floral or patterned ties. It’s just that all the guests who wear ties at the wedding will wear some kind of patterned tie, and we want the wedding party to look like the wedding party all night. Also, trends come and go. Consider opting for a solid, classic-colored tie that won’t have your future grandchildren making fun of you.

When you’re figuring out how to differentiate the groom from groomsmen, a different-colored tie is a subtle twist. Be even more different with a bow tie instead of a traditional tie like your groomsmen.

Don’t forget that additional accessories like a pocket square can also help differentiate the man of the hour from his groomsmen.

DIFFERENT BOUTONNIERE

Boutonnieres are traditionally given to people involved with the wedding so everyone knows they’re a “VIP” of the wedding. The groom, groomsmen, and family members are some of the VIPs that would get the honor of sporting a boutonniere. Choosing to wear boutonnieres helps to differentiate you and your groomsmen from all the other guests in suits.

The colors of floral boutonnieres can be changed so that your boutonniere is different from your groomsmen and family. But if you really want to stand out and show some personality, consider a super untraditional boutonniere of something you love. Whether you are a music lover or golf fan, a unique boutonniere shows your attendees who you are and that you are different from the rest of the guys.
