Don’t let the unknowns of choosing a suit get you down!
At the Modern Groom, we believe that nothing looks greater than a sharp dressed man in a suit that fits him right. That’s why we use an online questionnaire, photos of you, and our experienced virtual stylists to help you when it comes to choosing a suit. It’s our goal make sure that even if you’ve never worn a suit in your life, you will look fantastic for your wedding day.
In our extensive experience in the menswear world, we’ve also witnessed the mistakes that are commonly made when guys are choosing a suit. From choosing the color of the suit to the fit, here’s our top 5 mistakes to look out for:
#1 Going bigger for comfort
If you’re not used to wearing a suit, then you might be tempted to order a size up so you have some room to move around, hug people, and dance. This leads to the suits looking boxy and it is NOT flattering! A suit that isn’t the right size for you will look baggy and won’t give you those clean and modern lines we are going for. A properly fitted suit makes you look slim and trim, no matter what your body size is.
#2 Trendy suit colors/trendy vest colors
Have you ever seen the baby blue tuxes that were all the rage in the ’70s? There’s a reason why you know it was a wedding from the 70s; it was a fashion faux pas that has never been forgiven. Stick to the classics (like grey or blue) and you will never go wrong… and your kids won’t laugh at your wedding photos. Also, keep in mind that bright, bold, or trendy colors compete with the ladies, which is never a good look.
#3 Buttoning the jacket all the way up
Here’s all you need to know; for today’s modern two-button suits, the rule is “Always and Never.” It’s always fashionable to have the top button done up, but never the bottom button. When you sit down, unbutton them both, or take the jacket off completely. The matching vest we include will keep you looking sharp but feeling comfortable. (Hint: you can take off your jacket during a receiving line or the reception too. It will free you up for hugs, and keep your boutonniere from getting squished.)

#4 Long jackets are not best for long arms
We fit the length of the body first, and the sleeves second. If you have long arms but a short torso, your coat will ride below your bum, which makes for a messy look. Once our virtual stylists find the right length for your jacket, you can tailor the sleeves so they are just the right length (with the proper amount of sleeve showing).
#5 Magical thinking when it comes to your height or weight
When you fill out our online questionnaire, our best recommendation is to give us the measurements you have now, not the ones you hope you will have. If you don’t know exactly what you weigh, then step on a scale and get an accurate reading- not what it says on your driver’s license. Even fudging your height by an inch or two will result in a suit that doesn’t fit right. We promise you that a suit that fits you perfectly will make you feel 1000 times better than one that doesn’t. Also, keep in mind that sizing is very different in suits, so the size you wear in jeans is going to be different from the size of the pants you wear in a suit. Measure if you must, and let us fit your build!
