Get the fit right before the wedding — before you tailor, exchange or remove a tag.
Put on your entire look before you decide how anything fits — every piece changes how the next one sits. Order matters too, and a suit worn wrong looks exactly like a suit that fits wrong.
Get fully dressed — wedding shoes included — then stand in front of a mirror with your arms relaxed at your sides. For each point, tell us whether it looks right or which way it’s off, and we’ll tell you what to do about that piece: a tailor visit, a quick adjustment of your own, or a call to us.
Tucked in with the collar buttoned, the shirt should skim your body — no billowing through the middle, no pulling at the buttons. You want a finger’s room at the collar, the cuff sitting at your wrist bone, and enough length that it stays tucked when you move around.
The jacket sleeve should stop at your wrist bone, with about half an inch of shirt cuff showing past it. It shouldn’t cover your wrist or run down onto your hand.
Button the top button. You should be able to slide a flat hand inside the jacket, and the fabric should lie flat instead of pulling into an X at the button.
Every Modern Groom suit comes with a vest. Buttoned up — every button except the bottom one — it should sit close to your body and lie smooth through the chest and waist, with no pulling and no gaping. It should also come down far enough that no shirt shows between the bottom of the vest and the top of your pants. Fitted, but never restrictive.
There’s an adjustable cinch on the back of the vest. That’s always your first adjustment.
Suit pants sit higher than jeans: the waistband belongs about two fingers below your belly button and above your hip bones. Get them there before you judge anything — worn lower, they’ll read loose and long. At that height they should stay up without the belt doing all the work.
While you’re there, check the seat and thighs. If the waist fits but the seat or thighs are a little loose, a tailor can taper the pants. If they’re very tight, send us photos before any alterations — a tailor may be able to let the seat out a little, but you might need a larger pant size with the waist taken in.
Your pants arrived deliberately long and unhemmed. Nothing to judge here — every pair gets hemmed. We recommend a slight break, but it’s your suit: choose the look you like.
“Break” is the fold the fabric makes where the hem lands on your shoe. A slight break is one soft crease across the front — clean, with a little ease when you move. No break sits right on the shoe with no fold, for a sharper line. Any more than a slight break and the leg starts to puddle around your ankle — which is what you’re seeing if you’ve ever thought a suit looked sloppy without knowing why.
Pro tip: The slimmer the pant leg, the more important a clean hem becomes. For a slim fit, no break keeps the look sharp.
Some fit issues are completely normal tailoring adjustments. Others mean the size is wrong and you should talk to us first. Knowing which is which is the whole game — screenshot this and take it to your tailor.
